About Us...

Nelson is the home of Tasman United - the Top-of-the-South’s football franchise in the expanded nationwide ASB Premiership, which is the highest national level football competition in New Zealand. Tasman United is affiliated to Nelson Bays Football Inc (NBF), who are a branch office of the Mainland Football Federation. NBF govern football on the Federation’s behalf in the Nelson and Tasman Region. NBF have a robust governance model in existence which works in partnership with Mainland Football. This model was established in 2007 along with a new constitution.
It has worked successfully with a governing District Executive and a General Manager overseeing the operations. The regions success off the field has led to the development of local youth talent culminating in the Nelson Marlborough Falcons success in the 2014 National Youth League, followed by Nelson College becoming National Secondary School Football Champions in 2015.

Football is the No.1 Sport in the Nelson and Tasman Region with approximately 2,700 registered players from First Kicks to Senior Masters Football, and with a diverse population, which includes migrants from several nations where football is their National Sport, there is a unique blend of football fanaticism within the region. Through the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s Nelson had a very successful National League Club, Nelson United, who won the Chatham Cup in 1977. That desire for success is still alive throughout the Nelson and Marlborough Football Communities today.

NBF’s strong belief is that an inclusive representation of the region will aid in the long term sustainability of a Franchise at the Top of The South, providing a pathway for the talented players to develop from Club to U20s to National League. The aim is to develop an aspirational team that players and families can support with accessibility to watch top New Zealand players in action.
Nelson as a region possesses a first class facility at Trafalgar Park for home games, which will be amongst the best venues in the Premiership. In 2011 NBF hosted a Premiership game at Trafalgar Park, attended by 2,400+ spectators which was a resounding success and illustrates the appetite for top class football in the region.

NBF will seek sponsorship and funding from both within the local community and nationally to ensure robust and widespread income streams which in turn will lead to sustainability. The aim for the Franchise is to embed it firmly within the local community...

to benefit the present and future members of the community by promoting and developing football as a recreational facility, sporting activity and focus for community involvement; to be an inclusive organisation and canvass views from all stakeholders including supporters; to encourage and facilitate the team to play football at the highest level possible, but always to operate with fiscal responsibility; and finally to encourage all players to engage with all local clubs and assist in the development of football in the region through coaching and mentoring.

Nelson Bays Football and Tasman United’s vision for the area is simple… More Football – Better Football.
